Albus Dumbledore is dead, killed by Severus Snape. Before he died Harry was given the mission to search for the Horcruxes which hide parts of Voldemort's soul.

Four days before his 17th birthday Harry is visited and taken away by his friends. Soon afterwards they are attacked by Death Eaters and Harry encounters Voldemort. They manage to save themselves by escaping to the Wesleys.

During the preparations for the wedding of Ron's brother Bill the Minister appears and gives them what Dumbledore has left for Hermione, Ron and Harry in his will - a book, a deluminator and the Golden snitch which Harry had caught in his first Quidditch match. Harry also inherits the Sword of Gryffindor but it has disappeared.

A message arrives that the Minister is dead and the Ministry of Magic has fallen. They are attacked and the protecting magic around the house vanishes. Hermione, Ron and Harry are able to escape. After an incident with Death Eaters they escape to Harry's house which he has inherited from Sirius Black.

They find out that one of the Horcruxes is in the Ministry. They find it, but when their return to the house fails, they have to flee again. For weeks they are on the run living in a magic tent. One day Ron leaves them and Harry and Hermione go together to Harry's birthplace as they think the Sword of Gryffindor might be there. Again nothing.

Back in the forest Harry finds the sword by the help of a White Hind and also Ron returns. Harry is careless as he speaks out loud Voldemort's name. Suddenly all the protecting magic vanishes. They are caught and taken to Malfoy Manors.
