Like so many Scottish productions, the Citizens' Theatre, Glasgow, presentation of Cinderella is well and truly aimed at cheering youngsters on to enjoy the eternal fairy tale. It's the seventh panto devised by director of productions, Giles Havergal, and composer John Gould, with the book by Sid Colin and design by Colin Winslow, who designed two earlier Citizens' pantomimes.
Jean Gilpin makes the usual dashing Prince, Melanie Parr has appeal as Cinders and the Ugly Sisters are well played by David Hayman and Alex Norton as Philomena and Christobel. It is a switch for Hayman as Ugly Sister after playing Wishee Washee and Simple Simon and also his first Dame's role; his sparring partner Alex Norton may be recognised from the 7,84 and Borderline of Ayrshire theatre companies.
The role of Buttons goes to Hilton MacRae and other parts are taken by Freddie Boardley, Jo Cameron Brown, Dennis Charles, David Creedon, Sue Elgin, Pavel Douglas, Ciarán Hinds, Anna Keaveney, Jayne Lloyd, James McClure, Stephen Petcher and Linda Spurrier.
Pantomime effects are well contrived and both director and writer have caught the feel of a story with perennial appeal to family audiences. Like other Christmas seasons in the Gorbal theatre, this is again a happy show and includes most things in fantasy - scary trees, ghosts, skeletons and even a tiger.
